National Institute of Nutrition (NIN) is a premier nutrition research institute working under the aegis of Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India. National Institute of Nutrition (NIN) was founded by Sir Robert McCarrison in the year 1918 as ‘Beri-Beri’ Enquiry Unit in a single room laboratory at the Pasteur Institute, Coonoor, Tamil Nadu. Within a short span of seven years, this unit blossomed into a "Deficiency Disease Enquiry" and later in 1928, emerged as full-fledged "Nutrition Research Laboratories" (NRL) with Dr. McCarrison as its first Director. It was shifted to Hyderabad in 1958.
To achieve optimal nutrition of vulnerable segments of population such as women of reproductive age, children, adolescent girls and elderly by 2020.
To enable food and nutrition security conducive to good health, growth & development and increase productivity through dedicated research, so as to achieve the national nutrition goals set by the government of India in the national nutrition policy.
The institute is one of the oldest research centers in India, and the largest center, under the Indian Council of Medical Research, located in the vicinity of Osmania University. The institute has associated clinical and pediatric nutrition research wards at various hospitals such as the Niloufer Hospital for Women and Children, the Government Maternity Hospital, the Gandhi Medical College and the Osmania General Hospital in Hyderabad.
The Food and Drug Toxicology Research Centre, National Centre for Laboratory Animal Science, and the National Nutrition Monitoring Bureau are the other wings of NIN, for India's Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. The institute also derives funding from the Indian Department of Biotechnology. The institute majorly conducts pre clinical research in obesity and diabetes in collaboration with centers such as the Rockefeller University, University of Colorado School of Medicine, Washington University in the U.S., and the University of Wollongong-Australia, in food chemistry.
